World's Famous Supreme Team: Hey DJ

Just heard the sad news that Malcolm McLaren has died of cancer today in New York, so tonights blog is a tribute to the man. Where do you start with Malcolm McLaren? Briefly managed the New York Dolls before setting up the Sex Pistols and dressed the whole punk scene in it's unique image together with Vivienne Westwood. In 1983 McLaren recruited various musicians, rappers, singers and DJs from New York and Los Angeles to create The World's Famous Supreme Team and released his first album Duck Rock, an album which mixed up influences from Africa and the Americas, bringing hip-hop to a wider audience in the UK. Two of the singles from the album Buffalo Gals (sampled 20 years later by Eminem) and Double Dutch became top-10 hits in the UK.  Malcolm continued his involvement with the crew, in 1984 they released this tune Hey DJ (Malcolm also had  a writing credit), now a great piece of old skool hip hop and I still dig it!

McLaren’s 1989 album Waltz Darling introduced vogueing to the world preceding Madonna's Vogue by two years. Ultimately Malcolm McLaren was a one-off — an impresario and entertainer. RIP
